Day Trips, Short Breaks, Journeys and Holidays - no caravan required!

Open to every member of Awake. Things are organised by member Roger Coates with a life time of independent worldwide travel. I organise transport and hotels at best location and value. My knowledge and/or research produces information sheets for you to use the time well. This is guided independence. We don’t go around as a group. You decide on the pace and places.” Caravan” has visited Sheffield, Bristol, Northern Italy, St Malo France, Drax Power Station and twelve other places. Not lost anybody yet.
This is the travel group for ALL Awake members. I will always consider new ideas or repeats e.g. canal week 3 times, Edinburgh Fringe twice, St Ives by sleeper train twice, France twice. Caravan is for all members of Awake. Roger Coates
For details of future trips, watch this space, or please contact Roger by email, using the link at the top of this page. The next two proposed Caravan events are late Spring and high Summer 2025. I will give you lots of information, maps, bus numbers etc to fill days and evenings. You decide what to do. I will be on the trip to stand bail if you get arrested. Some members have been on most of the trips since the early days of AWAKE and keep returning for more. Recently we have seen lots of new members. The two trips below are repeats of two of the most popular. We filled a coach for Liverpool last time. These will be train travel. I am now asking for a contact from those interested. No dates yet. NO OBLIGATION. A call or message to say you may be interested will help me. Details, costs etc will be in the next AWAKEN newsletter. I book hotel
and travel. I am Roger Coates
Oxford and Kew: A two centre Caravan venture, Monday- Thursday nights May 12th to 15th.
Leave Hull early by train to Oxford. Mon and Tues night’s stay in the centre of Oxford. Perhaps visit… Ashmolean Museum, University Museum, Castle, Pitt Rivers Museum, Botanic Gardens, Bodlean Library, University Colleges, Covered Market, Sheldonian Theatre, Bridge of Sighs, Radcliffe Camera, Blenheim Palace .. Oxford does the welcome visitors thing very well. Our Premier Inn hotel is Oxford City Centre Westgate. u3a rules say I cannot book for you. Please make your own room bookings for May 12th and 13th. If that is a problem, call me. Contact me if you are a single willing to share. Booking early gets the best prices on the Premier system. I will get train tickets for bookers when that opens in March. You will need a Senior rail pass. If you fancy going up market, make your own hotel plan and tell me. Breakfast is where ideas are shared.
To KEW Wednesday 14th May. After breakfast, we move on to Kew in West London for two nights. (we are CARAVAN). You get your own train tickets at your time for this. Route details later. You to book 14th/15th May at Premier by Kew Bridge. Kew Gardens is a few minutes’ walk over the bridge. Richmond Park with deer is close and on underground or bus. Ham House nearby is an atmospheric 17th century house on the river. A rare survivor of the great Stuart houses. It was the scene of much royal jiggery pokery from 1600ish. If the weather suits, a few hours in Hampstead Village and the Heath could be fun. A good spot for wild swimmers! Underground to centre of London for theatre etc. is easy. We will take a late Hull Trains service home on Friday 16th.
A room price estimate is £260 p.p. in a shared room for 4 nights. Room only. Best value early booking price. Train fares are best value bought early. £33 out £36 back is a rough guide for early booking.
Ask me for more information or to book your place. I do not mind being called. Roger
Mid-August 2025: Suggested three nights in Cambridge. Train travel. We will stay in Christ’s College in the heart of this world destination with most of the world around us. Life behind the high walls is gentle and quiet. The uniformed porters keep out the riff raff (if that is the case, how are you lot going to get in!) We breakfast in college with other visitors. You will have en suite rooms. Train transport. If you may be interested, please give me a call or email
